The Plettenberg Bay Country Club (Length: 6057m (Men’s) 5081m (Ladies) Par/Rating: 72 / 71), nestled in a private nature reserve, the course has been a proud local institution since its inception in 1977. Designed by Robert Hawtree and more recently upgraded by Robert O’Friel, the 18-hole golf course is highly rated and is a popular tourist destination. Beautiful water features and ponds adorn the landscape and with no residential dwellings on the course, it’s a tranquil experience indeed. The course is easy to walk and the two main inclines are in view from the veranda. Visitors are welcome.
A short drive from town, takes you to Goose Valley Golf Club. (18-hole, 72 Par). Bordering on the Keurbooms Estuary, it’s a Gary Player Signature golf course offering breath taking views of the estuary, the sea and the Tsitsikamma Mountains. The course drains particularly well after heavy rains, which makes it playable all year round. A well-stocked pro-shop and a resident golf pro are on hand to cater to your every need. With fantastic reviews and a course that suits everyone’s needs, your golfing experience will be one to remember.
Pezula Championship Golf Course (Total: 5963 Metres, Par 72), covers 254 hectares on the Knysna clifftops, with stunning views of both the Knysna Lagoon and the Indian Ocean. An average round here will take you roughly five hours, time well spent for sure. Golf course architects Ronald Fream and David Dale of GolfPlan USA, have sculptured an incredibly diverse coastal terrain into a course that offers a total golfing experience for all players. The clubhouse offers guests and players exceptional facilities with spectacular views across the greens.
Simola Golf and Country Estate, situated lower than the ridges that surround it, and therefore untroubled by the wind that plagues so many coastal courses boasts an unusual configuration of five par-5s and five par-3s. The course offers challenging and rewarding golf for pros and high-handicap players alike. Designed by golfing legend, Jack Nicklaus, makes for a proper golfing experience par excellence. “Easy courses are fun occasionally, but I don’t think they stand the ‘test of time’ to be considered great courses”, says the Golden Bear. Allowing the natural land to dictate the design of the course has resulted in arguably one of the finest courses in the country.
